Dropping a table permanently removes its structure and stored rows. Use this only for a table confirmed to be unnecessary; clearing a cache through the application or removing a plugin through its supported process is often more appropriate.

Prepare for the change
Export the table and preferably the complete database first. Check the application’s table prefix, dependencies and ownership. A name that looks old or unfamiliar is not evidence that a table is unused.
01 Delete an unused database table with phpMyAdmin
- Open the correct database in phpMyAdmin and inspect the table’s structure and purpose. Confirm the application or vendor’s cleanup guidance.
- Check for references from other tables, scheduled jobs, reporting tools and plugins. Plan a quiet maintenance period if the live application could still access it.
- Select only the confirmed table and use Drop, reviewing the generated statement or confirmation carefully. Do not choose Check All for a single-table cleanup.
- Confirm the deletion only after verifying the database and table names. Keep the export until the application has been tested over the relevant workflow.
- Test the site’s affected features and inspect logs for missing-table errors. Document why the table was removed.
Confirm the expected result
The table should be absent and the application should continue its expected operations. A working homepage alone is insufficient if the table supported checkout, reporting or background jobs.
Can ROLLBACK recover a table dropped by mistake?
If the wrong table was dropped, stop affected writes and restore its structure and data from the verified backup. SQL DDL such as DROP may commit immediately and cannot be assumed reversible with ROLLBACK. If foreign-key checks reject deletion, investigate the dependency rather than disabling checks to force it.
