Diagnosing Cloudflare error 522 and origin connection timeouts

performance

Cloudflare error 522 means communication with the origin timed out. It often requires checking network reachability, dropped packets, server load and connection handling rather than changing website content.

Gather the details you will need

Capture a failing request’s time, Ray ID and hostname. Note whether the issue is continuous, regional or intermittent and confirm the origin IP is current.

01 Diagnose Cloudflare error 522 and origin connection timeouts

  1. Ask the provider to verify the origin is online and reachable on the required web port from Cloudflare’s network.
  2. Review firewall and rate-limit rules for silent drops, including current Cloudflare ranges and any recent security changes.
  3. Inspect origin load, connection queues and resource exhaustion around the recorded time. A server can be running but too overloaded to respond reliably.
  4. Check routing and address-family problems where available evidence points to a network path issue. Compare successful and failed timestamps.
  5. Correct the identified bottleneck or network policy, then retest and monitor a representative period rather than relying on one successful refresh.

Confirm the expected result

Requests should establish and maintain the required origin communication without repeated timeouts. Correlate recovery with server metrics or network evidence.

If the problem continues

Increasing PHP memory or clearing a browser cache does not directly repair a dropped connection. If only one slow application action fails after a connection succeeds, investigate 524-style application response delays instead.

Can the site work for me while Cloudflare receives 522?

Yes. Your direct network path and source address differ from Cloudflare’s. A firewall, routing issue or intermittent load can affect those paths differently, so compare evidence from the actual failing route.
