Forwarding sends an existing message to a new recipient. For ordinary collaboration an inline forward may be sufficient; for technical investigation the original message as an attachment can preserve useful headers.

What you need before you begin
Confirm whether the recipient needs the readable conversation or the original message for a technical investigation. Select the relevant message and check which forwarding or export options your Outlook edition offers.
01 Forward email and message attachments in current Outlook
- Open or select the message and choose Forward. In classic Outlook, the available more-response options can also offer forwarding as an attachment.
- Address the new message and explain what you need the recipient to do. Check the From mailbox.
- For an inline forward, review the thread and attachment list and remove unrelated content before expanding the audience. For an original message requested for header analysis, preserve it intact and send the relevant message through the authorised support route.
- Send and keep the original until the recipient confirms receipt. If a support team requests an original message file, follow the export or attachment option available in your Outlook edition.
Confirm the expected result
Confirm that the recipient can see the necessary content or open the original message file. A screenshot may show a symptom but will not preserve all routing headers needed for delivery analysis.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
Be careful with suspicious attachments and links. Forward the message for an authorised investigation without opening unsafe content. If a feature is absent in new Outlook, use its supported save/export workflow or the original mailbox's webmail tools.
A common question
Is forwarding one message the same as an automatic forwarder?
No. An automatic mailbox rule continues affecting future messages and has separate privacy, delivery and account-security implications.
