Understanding cPanel database names and account prefixes

cpanel-whm, development

cPanel often prefixes database and database-user names with the hosting account identity. Applications need the full names shown by the panel, not just the short suffix entered during creation.

Information to have ready

Open the application’s protected configuration and compare its database settings with the current hosting account. After migration, prefixes can differ from the source server even when the site and short database label are unchanged.

01 Check the full database and user names

  1. Open Manage My Databases and record the complete database name and assigned user exactly as displayed.
  2. Confirm the user is associated with that database and has the application’s required privileges.
  3. Update the application configuration with the full database name, full username, correct password and supplied host.
  4. Check any separate cron, staging or reporting configuration that uses the same database. Avoid assuming all components read one shared file.
  5. Test a fresh application connection and inspect errors without displaying credentials publicly.

02 Example: distinguish the database name from a WordPress table prefix

These illustrative names refer to different layers of the same website:

Value Example What it identifies
Database name acct_blog The database selected by the application connection.
Database user acct_bloguser The identity assigned privileges on that database.
WordPress table prefix site_ The prefix of tables inside the database, such as site_posts.

A migration can change the first two account-prefixed names while the tables still use site_. Keep WordPress's $table_prefix consistent with the migrated tables. Copy your actual values; do not rename a working database or its tables to match this example.

Confirm the expected result

The application should connect to the intended database and show the expected records. A successful connection to an empty similarly named database can look like a new installation, so verify content too.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If the full name is rejected or unavailable, check the actual current panel entry and character limits. Do not rename a production database just to match an old configuration unless you have a supported migration plan.

Is the WordPress table prefix the same thing?

No. A database name identifies the database connection, while a table prefix distinguishes groups of tables inside it. Changing one does not automatically change the other, and both must match the application’s real data.
