A domain’s default address handles incoming mail addressed to names that do not exist as mailboxes or forwarders. Choosing deliberate handling reduces accidental message loss and prevents a catchall from filling an account with unwanted mail.

Information to have ready
List the addresses customers genuinely use and create explicit mailboxes or forwarders for them first. The domain default address is separate from cPanel’s system-user mailbox and is not a way to set every website’s outgoing From address.
01 Choose safe handling for mail sent to nonexistent addresses
- Open Default Address and choose the correct domain.
- For domains that should accept mail only for known recipients, select rejection during SMTP with an appropriate error message. This allows the sending server to report the invalid destination.
- If a catchall is a deliberate business requirement, select forwarding to a monitored address with sufficient storage and a spam-management plan.
- Save the change and test both an existing valid address and a made-up recipient. Use a sender outside the hosting account.
- Review delivery results and monitor the catchall’s volume if enabled. Replace frequently used misspellings with explicit aliases when appropriate.
Confirm the expected result
Valid recipients should continue receiving mail. Unknown addresses should follow the selected rejection or forwarding policy without silently disappearing contrary to your intention.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
A domain-wide forwarder or remote mail provider can affect the outcome. Check Email Routing and authoritative MX records if this server is not responsible for incoming mail. Avoid silently discarding all unknown mail merely to conceal errors from senders.
Can a catchall replace proper mailbox setup?
It can collect unknown recipients, but it cannot provide separate logins or controlled access for each address. Use named accounts and explicit forwarding rules for normal business roles.
