Domain recovery depends on the exact lifecycle stage and extension. An expired domain might still support ordinary renewal, require a more expensive restoration, or have progressed beyond the point where its current holder can recover it through the registrar.

01 Identify the stage
Check the authenticated domain account and the registry status. Expiration is a date; redemptionPeriod and pendingDelete describe later registry states. Do not assume that every domain receives the same customer grace period after expiry.
For generic domains covered by ICANN's recovery policy, a qualifying deletion enters a 30-day redemption period. Restoration is handled through the registrar that deleted the domain. Exceptions exist, and country-code registries use their own rules. Obtain the current domain-specific recovery deadline and charge from the provider.
02 Request recovery safely
- Locate the account that held the domain and confirm the authorised owner.
- Provide the exact domain, last invoice and current lookup status. Ask whether ordinary renewal or registry restoration is available.
- Review the quoted restoration and renewal components, currency and supported term before approving payment.
- Track the resulting operation to completion. A submitted request or paid invoice alone does not prove the registry accepted it.
- After recovery, verify the domain's new expiry, nameservers and DNSSEC configuration. Test website and email service before closing the incident.
Can I transfer the domain elsewhere to avoid restoration?
A domain in redemption generally has to be restored through its current registrar before it can be transferred. A transfer order is not a shortcut around the restoration stage. Contact the current provider promptly rather than waiting for a new registrar to complete an ineligible request.
Can you guarantee that I will get a deleted name back?
No. Once the applicable recovery period has ended, restoration may be unavailable. If the registry later releases the name, another registrant can obtain it; a search result or monitoring service does not reserve it for you. Ask support what remains possible for the actual status and extension, and avoid publishing a promised recovery date to your customers until registration is confirmed.
