Choose a transfer date with enough time to resolve a lock, contact problem or rejected request before expiry. If a critical domain is already close to expiring, confirm its renewal and recovery options before relying on a transfer to keep it registered.

01 Compare the two operations
A renewal extends the registration through the current provider. A registrar transfer changes the sponsoring registrar and may include a registration extension under that registry's rules. It does not automatically migrate your website, mailboxes or DNS hosting.
- Check the domain's current expiry and full status list.
- Confirm transfer eligibility, including timed restrictions and access to the required authorisation method.
- Ask the receiving provider which extension, if any, the transfer includes for this exact TLD and term.
- Compare the proposed transfer window with the current provider's renewal deadline.
- If you renew first, retain the receipt and ask how a transfer soon afterward affects the final expiration date and any applicable refund rules.
Will paying for renewal and transfer always add two years?
Do not assume so. Registry rules can treat a transfer during an automatic renewal grace period differently from an ordinary explicit renewal. Maximum registration terms and country-code transfer rules can also affect the outcome. Obtain a domain-specific explanation rather than using a generic arithmetic rule.
Review the resulting expiry after both operations. A renewal invoice and a transfer invoice describe separate purchases; their existence does not establish which registry extensions were retained.
Can an expired domain still transfer?
Expiry alone does not automatically prohibit every generic-domain transfer, but the domain must still be eligible and relevant payment or status restrictions can matter. A domain in redemption needs restoration through the current registrar first. With an important business name, ask the current provider to confirm its status and deadline immediately.
Keep existing DNS hosting active during the transfer unless you have deliberately planned a separate migration. After completion, confirm the new registrar, account access, renewal preference, contact details and expiry. A successful transfer should leave a clear owner and a functioning renewal plan, not just a new entry in a different control panel.
