Keep website and email DNS available during a registrar transfer

domains-dns, email

A registrar transfer can preserve a working website and email service when the existing authoritative DNS remains available. Before moving the registration, check whether the old provider's DNS hosting will continue after the domain leaves.

01 Record the current service dependencies

  1. Export the authoritative zone or record its full configuration. Include website addresses, mail records, verification records, service aliases and delegated subdomains.
  2. Record the live parent nameservers and any DNSSEC DS records at the registrar.
  3. Ask the existing provider whether its DNS service ends when the registrar transfer completes or when a bundled product is cancelled.
  4. Confirm continued access to the current website and mail services. A domain transfer order does not copy those services.
  5. Keep both providers' support references and the intended cutover plan available to the authorised operator.

02 Choose one of two workable plans

If DNS hosting will remain active, retain the nameservers during the registrar transfer and verify their answers after completion. Move DNS separately later if needed.

If DNS will end, prepare the replacement zone first. Compare every required record, verify the new authoritative servers directly and coordinate DNSSEC. Then schedule the delegation change with enough overlap for existing caches. Do not switch to an empty zone because a transfer welcome email shows new nameservers.

Will the transfer copy my DNS records automatically?

Do not assume so. Registration and zone hosting are separate services. A receiving provider may offer an import or migration feature, but its result still needs checking. Automated discovery can miss records that are not visible in ordinary public queries, including unused verification entries and less common service names.

Keep the old DNS service active for the planned overlap and query both old and new authoritative servers during the transition. Test website HTTPS, inbound and outbound email, and critical external service verification. Check public DNSSEC validation as well as ordinary record answers.

After the registrar transfer completes, verify the registered nameservers rather than only the account's DNS editor. Finally update the portfolio inventory with the new registrar, renewal setting and recovery contacts, and retire the old service only after its dependencies are removed.
