Checking local and external mail routing on Plesk for Windows

plesk, email

Plesk for Windows needs a deliberate local-mail setting when a domain uses an external email provider. Public MX records tell other servers where to send mail, while local server configuration can influence messages generated by websites on the same hosting server.

What you need before you begin

Identify the intended mail provider, authoritative MX records and any existing local mailboxes. Back up local messages before a migration. Distinguish disabling local service from an option that removes mail configuration and stored mail.

01 Check local and external mail routing on Plesk for Windows

  1. Open the domain Mail Settings in Plesk for Windows. Review whether the local mail service is enabled.
  2. For an external-mail domain, select the supported disabled state after confirming the migration and application sending plan. Read the confirmation carefully. Do not select a destructive not-configured/removal option merely to change routing.
  3. At the authoritative DNS provider, verify the external provider MX records and required authentication or verification records. Plesk DNS changes affect public delivery only when that zone is authoritative.
  4. Configure website-generated mail through an authenticated SMTP service authorized for the sender. On Windows, disabling the domain mail service can affect both incoming and outgoing local service, so do not assume Linux send-only behaviour applies.
  5. Test a website message to an address on the same domain and to an independent external domain. Also test incoming mail from an independent sender.

How do I test the selected mail route?

Confirm messages arrive in the external provider mailbox and do not remain in an unexpected local mailbox or queue. Review headers and the configured sender authentication. Keep the old mailbox data protected until the transition is verified.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If same-domain website mail fails while external mail works, inspect local routing and the application SMTP configuration. If incoming mail goes elsewhere, verify authoritative MX rather than changing random Plesk mailbox settings. For a mistaken destructive removal, stop further changes and recover from the verified backup; recreating an address does not restore its previous messages.
