Ask WordPress AI Engineer for a narrowly scoped CSS change with clear visual and interaction checks. A small style fix can still affect many pages when a selector is too broad, so identify the exact element and the views that must remain usable.

01 Describe the intended result
Provide the page URL, target element and the problem at a specific screen size. Explain the desired spacing, alignment or appearance in concrete terms. Include any brand colour or radius constraint and preserve the current style source before editing.
02 Review and test the change
- Use a staging copy when the style affects a shared header, checkout or important conversion area.
- Ask the Engineer to inspect the existing selector and style ownership before adding rules.
- Request the smallest suitable selector and a maintainable location such as supported custom CSS or a child theme.
- Review the proposed change and any file snapshot or backup available.
- Approve the understood scope, then test desktop, mobile and keyboard interaction.
- Check a second page using the same component before deploying.
03 Example: keep a responsive CSS fix inside one page component
After inspecting the actual markup, suppose the affected page is ID 42 and its button group uses contact-actions. This example wraps and spaces only that verified component. Replace the selectors with the real ones before considering the change.
body.page-id-42 .contact-actions {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
align-items: center;
gap: 0.75rem;
}
body.page-id-42 .contact-actions .button {
max-width: 100%;
white-space: normal;
}
Ask the Engineer to explain the existing style source and propose the appropriate custom-CSS or child-theme location. Test long button labels, a narrow phone view and zoomed text. Preserve the theme’s visible focus indication and confirm other button groups are unaffected.
Expected result: The original overlap is resolved with a specific, maintainable rule. Record where it was saved: a database CSS setting needs its own revision or backup, while eligible Engineer file edits can have their separate supported Undo record.
What is a useful prompt?
“On this page, the contact button overlaps the text below 480px. Please inspect the existing layout and propose a scoped CSS correction. Preserve the visible keyboard focus and the other buttons' styles. Show the change before applying it.”
Should the AI add important to every rule?
No. Repeated forced overrides can hide the real cascade or layout issue and make future maintenance harder. Ask why the existing rule wins and whether adjusting the correct source is more appropriate than adding another broad override.
Does a visual change need functional checks?
Yes. Confirm that text remains readable when zoomed, controls stay clickable, focus is visible and content is not hidden at narrow widths. Animation should respect reduced-motion needs where it is introduced. A polished screenshot is not enough if keyboard or touch users cannot operate the component.
04 Verify and preserve the result
Clear the relevant style cache and inspect the public page as a visitor. Record the selector, purpose and location of the change. File Undo only applies when the eligible Engineer file tool created a snapshot; CSS stored in database settings needs its own revision or backup recovery path.
