Reviewing an AI-proposed WordPress file change

nabwp, wordpress

Review the specific file change proposed by WordPress AI Engineer before approving it. The most useful review checks the target, intended behaviour, possible side effects and recovery method, not only whether the code looks plausible.

01 Confirm the context

Check the selected website and whether it is staging or live. Identify the file's owner: a child theme, custom plugin, vendor plugin or core component. Direct edits to maintained vendor files can be overwritten by updates, so ask whether a supported extension point or custom component is more appropriate.

02 Inspect and approve deliberately

  1. Read the explanation of the problem and the proposed fix.
  2. Open See the change when available and inspect the file path and changed sections.
  3. Ask how the change will be tested and whether it touches authentication, data writes, payment or other sensitive workflows.
  4. Confirm a suitable backup or supported file snapshot exists for the risk involved.
  5. Select Go ahead for the reviewed action or Don't if it needs revision.
  6. Read the execution result and perform the agreed functional test.

03 Example: review an output-escaping change in its actual context

Suppose the Engineer proposes this line inside an existing custom component where $label is intended to be plain text. Review the complete surrounding function and file ownership, not just whether the one line appears plausible.

Code or configuration example
echo '<span class="booking-label">' . esc_html($label) . '</span>';

Text-node escaping fits this example. An attribute, URL or deliberately permitted HTML fragment requires its own context-appropriate handling. Ask to see the proposed diff, confirm that an eligible file snapshot or other recovery copy exists, and keep the change in a maintained custom component instead of an update-managed vendor file.

Expected result: Ordinary labels remain readable and test text containing <strong> appears as literal text rather than unintended markup. The original bug is checked alongside nearby output, and the activity record identifies the exact reviewed file change.

Does approving one file change approve every later change?

With normal approval mode, subsequent proposed writes can require their own review. Enabling Run changes without asking changes that interaction, so keep it off when you want to assess individual operations. Do not assume every risky WordPress action still prompts separately in automatic mode.

Will Undo cover this change?

Supported explicit WordPress Engineer file-edit and file-write tools can create an Undo record. A shell command that edits a file, a database query or a plugin operation is not automatically covered by that same file Undo mechanism. Check the actual action and displayed recovery option.

04 Check the final effect

Test the original problem, a nearby unaffected workflow and the relevant mobile or logged-out view. Inspect logs for new errors and clear only necessary caches. Keep a brief record of the file, purpose and verification result. If the change fails, stop further speculative edits and use the appropriate recovery method while preserving any newer work that must not be overwritten.
