Test whether WooCommerce calculates tax according to the rules your business has already confirmed with an appropriate adviser. This procedure checks software configuration and checkout behaviour; it does not determine which taxes your business is legally required to collect.

01 Prepare an expected-results matrix
Ask the responsible business or tax adviser to confirm the relevant regions, product classifications, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing and shipping treatment. Create representative test cases with an independently calculated expected result. Include a normal sale, a discounted sale and any supported exemption workflow.
02 Check the store configuration
- On staging, review the store address and customer-location basis.
- Confirm that tax calculation is enabled and identify whether core rates or an external tax service is authoritative.
- Review the applicable rate tables and product tax classes without changing legal assumptions.
- Enter each representative customer address at checkout and compare the tax lines and total with the expected result.
- Test shipping, coupons and mixed tax classes where the store actually uses them.
- Record the configuration and evidence for any discrepancy before changing settings.
Why is no tax shown before an address is entered?
The result can depend on the default customer-location setting and whether WooCommerce has enough address information to choose a rate. Compare the final confirmed address calculation with the initial estimate. Do not assume a geolocated visitor's first displayed amount is the final tax result.
Should I copy rates from another store?
No. Another store may have different obligations, locations, products or tax-service arrangements. Use confirmed requirements for your own business and keep the rate source documented. A technically accepted rate table is not evidence that its contents are legally correct.
03 Verify order records and rounding
Complete sandbox orders for the approved cases and inspect the stored line taxes, shipping taxes and totals. Compare discount allocation and rounding at the chosen level. If an external service is used, review its request and response safely without exposing customer information.
04 Maintain the test set
Repeat the relevant tests after changing tax services, product classes, price-display settings or checkout extensions. Escalate calculation discrepancies with the exact configuration and expected result. Refer questions about obligations, exemptions or filing to the qualified adviser who owns those decisions.
