Choosing separate WordPress websites or a Multisite network

nabwp, wordpress

Hosting several WordPress websites usually means managing separate WordPress installations, each with its own website content and configuration. WordPress Multisite is a different arrangement: it runs a network of sites through one WordPress installation, with network administration and shared components. Our NabWP tools can recognise these different arrangements, but Multisite is available only when the plan permits it.

01 Compare independent installations and network management

Separate installations can be useful when projects need different themes, plugins, update schedules or development decisions. You select each website in the manager and work within that website's tools. The number of independent websites you can create is governed by your plan's website allowance and available resources.

A Multisite network may suit a group of related sites that need central administration, but it changes how the network is organised and managed. Plugin compatibility, permissions and backup or recovery planning need to account for the network. The ability to create several independent sites does not automatically mean your plan includes Multisite conversion.

02 Plan the structure before converting or copying

Before converting an established installation, take a complete backup and discuss the intended structure with our team. Explain whether the sites are related, whether they need separate ownership and how you expect domains or addresses to work. Conversion should be a deliberate architecture decision, not a shortcut for avoiding the resource or website limits of a hosting plan.

Staging and cloning are separate concepts again. A full independent clone is another website, while an eligible staging copy is associated with the site used for testing. Both still consume resources. If you are managing client projects, also confirm the required access and account arrangement rather than assuming that a multiple-website plan is automatically a reseller service. We can help you select a structure that matches how the websites will actually be maintained.

When should I choose independent sites instead of Multisite?

  1. Decide whether sites need independent owners, themes, plugins, deployment schedules or recovery plans.
  2. Compare that requirement with a shared WordPress network and confirm Multisite is permitted for the plan.
  3. Plan addresses, DNS, certificates and backup scope before converting an established installation.

Several separate sites on one NabWP service still share that service's hosting resources and AI allowance. A staging copy and an independent clone have different roles, and both consume resources even when an eligible staging installation is excluded from the website count.
