Recovery depends on what the Engineer changed and which recovery tools are available for your service. Our WordPress AI Engineer keeps reversible versions for supported file changes made through its dedicated write and edit tools. Where an Undo action is available and the saved version is still accessible, it can put that file back or remove a new file created by that supported action.

01 Compare file Undo, backup restoration and staging
| Method | Scope and practical limitation |
|---|---|
| Supported file Undo | That file-level Undo does not cover every operation an Engineer can perform. A database update, a shell command, a plugin operation, a mailbox change, or a group of related actions may need a different recovery method. You should not assume that one Undo button can return the entire hosting account to an earlier state. |
| Backup and restore | A backup provides a stored copy of the components included in that backup. A restore uses that copy to replace the selected current data. Before a larger WordPress change, confirm whether the available backup includes both files and the database. For general Web Hosting, review the backup and restore tools available for the affected service and the exact data they cover. |
| Staging | Staging helps you test a proposed change before exposing the live website to it, but it also needs a deliberate process when changes are moved back to production. |
02 Protect newer data and verify the recovery
Restoring older data can overwrite valid changes made after the backup, including new content or transactions where those items are included in the restore.
Before approving significant work, ask the Engineer to explain the recovery plan for that task. If a change has already caused a problem, pause additional changes, record what happened, and check the available recovery options with us. Treat successful recovery as something to verify, rather than a guarantee attached to every AI action.
03 Example: choose recovery for the actual changed data
Consider two different changes. The WordPress Engineer edited a CSS file through its supported file-edit tool, and an Undo record is still available. Review that record and restore the file when it is the appropriate reversal, then inspect the page.
In a separate incident, a database change affected an order while new orders continued arriving. Reversing a CSS file would not repair that database state. Identify the affected data, preserve newer valid orders and agree the appropriate database recovery process.
Expected result: the recovery matches the operation and dependencies. An available Undo button for one supported file does not establish a complete rollback of every action in the session.
When should I use file Undo instead of a backup restore?
- For a supported WordPress Engineer file edit, locate the corresponding Undo action and check that its saved version is still available.
- For a page-content change, inspect WordPress revisions where available. For a database or broader application change, identify the necessary backup and restore scope.
- Preserve newer valid data before recovery, then test the restored function and the original cause of the problem.
Undo history is limited and should not be your long-term backup strategy. Shell commands, SQL, plugin operations and hosting changes do not acquire universal rollback simply because they were requested in the Engineer. If several dependent operations were performed, plan recovery for the complete set rather than reversing one file without checking its dependencies.
