Investigating a slow connection while NordVPN is active

security-ssl

Compare like-for-like measurements to identify why a NordVPN connection feels slow. The local network, chosen server, route, protocol and destination website can each contribute, so change one factor at a time.

01 Collect and compare evidence

  1. Record the device, app version, network type, selected country or server and protocol. Note whether the problem affects every site or one specific application.
  2. Pause large background transfers and use the same test destination for each measurement. Record download, upload and latency rather than relying on one headline number.
  3. When appropriate for the test, compare the same connection with and without the VPN. Avoid sensitive activity during the non-VPN comparison and restore the intended settings afterwards.
  4. Try the recommended connection and a nearby supported country. A geographically distant route can add latency even when the connection is functioning normally.
  5. Update the app through its official update mechanism. Test another available supported protocol, preserving a note of the previous setting.
  6. Compare another device or network where available. This helps distinguish a device-specific issue from Wi-Fi congestion or an internet-provider problem.
  7. Send support the results and timestamps if the slowdown persists. Include any app error while removing account tokens or other secrets from diagnostic material.

Common questions

Should I reset all network settings first?

No. A reset can remove saved network and VPN configuration. Use it only when the evidence and official troubleshooting process justify that disruption.

Does one slow website prove the VPN is slow?

Check other destinations. The website itself, its region or its treatment of VPN traffic may explain an isolated problem.

Should I disable security software permanently?

No. Investigate a suspected conflict with the relevant provider and use a narrowly supported correction. Restore any temporary diagnostic change after the test.
