Finding where an uploaded image is used before deleting it

wordpress

Check an image's references before deleting it from the Media Library. An Unattached label does not prove the file is unused, because pages, templates, plugins and external websites can refer to it without the original attachment relationship.

01 Record the media identity

Note the attachment ID, filename and direct URL. Keep a copy of the original and a suitable backup before a large cleanup. If the image is a logo, background, product image or document preview, expect references outside ordinary post content.

02 Review likely uses

  1. Search page and post content for the image or its URL using the site's supported tools.
  2. Check featured images, galleries, synced patterns, template parts and theme settings.
  3. Review relevant plugin records, such as products, sliders or page-builder layouts.
  4. Consider links in emails, downloadable documents and external sites that a WordPress content search cannot discover.
  5. For uncertain items, retain them until a developer-reviewed reference check or replacement plan is complete.

Can an unused-media report prove an image is safe to delete?

A media-cleanup plugin can help identify candidates, but its detection is limited by the storage formats and integrations it understands. Review its documentation and test on staging. Do not treat an automated unused label as proof that deletion is safe.

Generated thumbnail files also have relationships to the original media record. Manually deleting similarly named files from the uploads folder can break responsive images even when the main original remains.

03 Delete and verify a small selection

Start with a reviewed small set and inspect the affected public pages afterward. Media deletion can be permanent, so preserve a recovery copy and know how to restore the correct file paths and metadata if necessary.

If a broken image appears later, record the requested URL and identify whether it was an original or a generated size. Restoring only a different filename may not fix the reference. A database restore can overwrite newer content, so prefer a targeted recovery when the scope is known.

Storage cleanup is successful when the site remains complete and the removed files are genuinely unnecessary, not merely when the uploads folder becomes smaller.
