Large public downloads can be delivered from a suitable file-storage or content-delivery service while WordPress remains the place visitors discover them. Plan the destination, access rules and old links before moving the files.
IN THIS ARTICLE
01 Define the delivery requirements
Record file sizes, expected download volume, update frequency and whether access is public or restricted. Check the chosen service's limits, costs and retention behaviour directly before committing. Do not assume that a generic share link is suitable for permanent public delivery or confidential customer files.
Keep an original copy and a record of the current URLs. Files linked from emails or external websites may need a stable compatibility route after the move.
02 Move and verify a test file
- Upload a representative file to the approved destination and configure the intended access permissions.
- Obtain its supported download URL and test it while signed out or with a representative authorised account.
- Check filename, content type, download completion and any expiry behaviour.
- Update a draft WordPress File block or link to the new destination.
- Test on a mobile connection and another browser before moving the full collection.
What should happen to existing download links after the move?
Update important internal references and decide whether old URLs should redirect, remain temporarily available or return a clear replacement page. Use an appropriate redirect only where the old and new resources correspond.
If access is restricted, do not expose a permanent public storage URL behind a protected WordPress page. The delivery service or application must enforce the intended authorisation at the file request itself.
03 Complete the migration
Compare file integrity or checksums where practical and confirm that all expected files are present. Keep the original location until the new route and external-link plan are verified.
Review backup coverage, since a WordPress backup may no longer include the remotely stored files. Document who owns the storage account, renewal and recovery process. If downloads fail only for some visitors, record the destination response and access conditions rather than reuploading files blindly. A successful move preserves availability and permissions while reducing the workload on the hosting account.
