Troubleshooting a WordPress image upload error

wordpress

An image upload can fail while transferring the file or while generating its usable sizes. Identify the stage and exact error before changing permissions or increasing limits across the whole account.

01 Collect a small reproducible example

Record the file format, pixel dimensions, byte size and visible error. Note whether the problem affects one image or every upload. Preserve the original locally and avoid repeatedly submitting it, which can leave partial files or duplicate media records.

02 Run targeted checks

  1. Try a modest known-good JPEG or PNG through the same upload screen.
  2. Check the hosting account's available storage and the upload limit shown by WordPress.
  3. Review Site Health information for the media-processing environment and relevant errors.
  4. Check whether the failure occurs before the file reaches the library or after it appears while thumbnails are being created.
  5. Review recent security, optimisation or media-plugin changes on staging when a conflict is suspected.

How do I choose the right fix for an upload error?

A file exceeding the request limit may need a smaller web export or a reviewed hosting-limit change. A processing failure can involve dimensions, memory, a damaged file or format support. Newer WordPress versions can use browser-side processing in supported circumstances, so investigate the actual path rather than assuming all work happens on the server.

A permissions error needs correct ownership and narrowly appropriate permissions. Do not set the entire uploads tree to world-writable permissions as a generic repair.

03 Verify the completed upload

After correcting the cause, upload one test file and confirm that the original and expected sizes display in a draft and on the public page. Remove reviewed failed duplicates only after identifying which media record is in use.

When contacting us, provide the domain, upload time, exact error and non-sensitive file characteristics. A safe sample image can help reproduce the issue. Do not send confidential originals unless necessary through an agreed secure channel. If the upload works in another browser, compare browser extensions and processing errors before changing server configuration.
